Why HEIC Files Need Converting
Apple devices save photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) format by default. HEIC offers excellent compression, but many Windows apps, websites, and email clients still expect JPG. That mismatch is why a photo looks fine on your iPhone and then “won’t open” on a PC.
Method 1: Online Converter (Fastest)
- Open Image Converter or our dedicated HEIC to JPG page.
- Upload your HEIC files.
- Select JPG as the output format.
- Download converted files.
Browser-based conversion keeps photos on your device when processing stays local.
Method 2: Change iPhone Camera Settings
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats → select "Most Compatible" to shoot JPG instead of HEIC going forward. This does not convert existing photos.
Practice With Real Sample HEIC Files
Not ready to use personal photos? Download free samples from Sample Files → HEIC and test the converter first. Those are real HEIC downloads from our sample library — not decorative placeholders in the article.
Quality Tips
- Use around 85% JPG quality for a good balance of size and clarity.
- Batch convert an entire set and download as ZIP when available.
